People searching for a psychotherapist have many questions - and that is understandable, reasonable and expected! Below are some that I often hear, and may help to clarify your search.
Julie Sayre
You have the letters LMFT and CTT after your name. What IS an LMFT? And a CTT?An LMFT is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. We work with individuals, too! We are trained to consider family systems as we work. This means that if you, as an individual, seek therapy with an LMFT, s/he will ask you questions to assess your current relationships - most of the time, individuals seek therapy to explore or resolve conflict about a current or past relationship. A CTT is a Certifed Trauma Therapist. As a CTT, I have received additional training and supervision in the specialty of trauma, addressing individual and relational issues related to all types of trauma, whether from childhood or as an adult.
So you do work with individuals, too?Yes. Clients who strictly want to do individual work are a great fit with an LMFT, because often, that work is about their past, in the context of a primary or significant relationship.
How do you define "family" in your work? This is a great question - "family" holds many definitions. I work with families who are traditionally married, and with stepfamilies (a focus of my graduate research), as well as those seeking pre-marital and other relational therapy. My work includes adult "children" and their parents, and divorcing parents who need help with co-parenting. Our therapy works in the context of any family, however the clients define it.
How do you arrange payment? My clients pay for services in full at the end of each visit, usually by check. I do not accept credit or debit cards. I provide clients with a "superbill" at the end of each session, which they can submit to insurance if they have "out-of-net" benefits or to their health fund program at work, if applicable.
How do I schedule an appointment with you?You may reach me by clicking here. You may also reach me by telephone at 703-777-7511. We will speak directly by phone to conduct a brief intake. This also gives you an opportunity to ask any other questions you might have. I will take your contact information, we will briefly talk about what brings you to therapy and schedule an appointment for you.
I want to bring my partner or teen to therapy but they refuse!LMFT's work systemically and help their clients think that way, too. Change in one part of the family system will lead to change in others. If you come to therapy without your spouse/partner/child, you will still notice that change occurs in your relationships - however, the more family members are involved, the more profound and lasting the changes.
According to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, clients who seek help from an LMFT report individual improvement in their sense of well-being, and approximately three-fourths report their adult relationships or parent-child relationships have improved.
